Suess GriffinSuess Griffin

Hi, I’m Suess Griffin a self taught Polymer Clay artist. I discovered this wonderful product 20 years ago. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree & a background in animation. Combining this & a love of  nature, informative books & websites I have developed a skill for creating beautiful pieces of wearable art out of Polymer Clay, Semi precious stones, Silver and Gold.

One of the most delightful materials that have discovered for making jewellery is polymer clay. More commonly known by its trade name, Fimo, Sculpy or Premo.

Polymer Clay is an inexpensive, man made material that comes in the full spectrum of colours and is soft & pliable. It can be blended & formed into an unlimited number of patterns. You can mould it, incise designs into it, transfer printed images onto it, embellish it with gold leaf or even add pearls & semi precious stones to it.

This material is so versatile; you will never run out of possibilities. I will teach you with clear step-by-step instructions, how to handle Polymer clay, which tools to use & how to create beautiful jewellery.

You will find the basic techniques easy to learn. You will learn simple methods for making complex pieces that appear nearly impossible much easier to do. I will also show you how to bake your beautiful pieces in your household oven.

 Starry Starfish Bracelet

A piece of our Australian Great Barrier Reef to wear on your wrist. Made from Polymer clay, Freshwater pearls, Coral & Sterling silver.

A Gallery for a Pink Galah

Here we are going to create a stunning necklace of the Australian bush and our beautiful but comical Galah. Made from Polymer clay, Semi Precious Stones, Freshwater Pearls & sterling silver. This piece you can proudly wear around your neck or display in a frame on your wall.

Jean CrabbJean Crabb

My name is Jean Crabb and I am a Townville girl born and bred.

I have been beading for over 10 years and specifically making wire jewellery for about 7 years.  I love it.  I began to learn by a tutorial by Preston Reuther and American wire worker.  I have since gone on to do a few of my own things and hope you will enjoy the classes as much as I enjoy sharing my knowledge with you.

Create this bead and wire bracelet with craft wire and 6mm faceted beads.  You will learn how to incorporate the clasp, as you make the bracelet.  Choose from bronze as pictured or blue or purple colour schemes.

Create this fantastic craft wire and glass bead pendant and earring set that will make your friends say WOW.  Learn how to make the ear wire a part of the earrings not just an add on at the end.  Also learn how to make swirls and curls with the wire to enhance the piece.

Create this butterflied wire bracelet in your choice of gold and silver, maroon and gold or deep dark blue and copper.

Create this wire-sculptured pendant with glass bead and craft wire.  Enhance the finished pendant with a necklace and beads to match.  You will have the choice of purple, blue, and green with gold or silver wire and enhancements.

All classes will include materials needed to make the piece. If you wish to bring your own tools feel free to do so. Each class will take approx 2-3 hours.

Jean Crabb will be running 4 classes at the festival

Donni HakansonDonni Hakanson

Donni Hakanson lives in Townsville and has been creating with soft glass since 2002. Her work has appeared in publications in Australia (Beads, Etc) and U.S.A. (Bead & Button, Spotlight on Glass) Her work is also touring in The Tempest International Invitational Exhibition of Glass.

Donni is drawn to creating encased flowers and surreal three-dimensional beads and marbles. She loves creating pieces that draw the viewer in to explore.

Encased Floral Bead with Vines – Intermediate – Advanced Level –  3 to 4 Hours

In this class you will learn how to create a floral bead with vines. You will be able to make a vine cane (and time permitting, a simple latticino cane) and learn how to use it, followed by a simple plunged flower. The next step will be learning how to drag and crease the petals for a more realistic look. Time permitting; we will also cover how to create daffodils.

This class also covers how to apply bubble-free crystal encasing layers.

Encased Floral Bead– Intermediate – Advanced Level - 3 to 4 Hours

This class deals exclusively with flowers. We will learn how roll the bead in frit and encase it, followed by how to create simple 3D flowers, flowers with creased petals, and dragged tips for more realism.

Applying bubble-free clear encasing is also covered.

Midnight Focal  – Intermediate - 3 to 4 Hours

Learn how to create the bead that won one of the Reader’s Choice awards in the first year of publication of “Beads, Etc” magazine! This effect creates a 3D flower in a 2D base, with silvered stringer and a cubic zirconia in one of the blossoms.

Unleashing your Creativity in Glass – Fungis & Funnels & Fun Manipulations – Intermediate - 3 to 4 Hours

Explore the three dimensionality of glass and perfect encasing with this workshop. Fungis and funnels are a great alternative for guy beads... and depending on where you place them in the bead, they can add a different viewpoint whichever way you look at it due to their solid shape within the bead. Fungis also add interest to abstract or organic beads and will get you thinking 'out of the box'! This workshop will also cover little tunnels or corkscrews within the glass.

Spikes  – Intermediate - 3 to 4 Hours

From a simple encased bead ringed with three dimensional spikes or little thorns emerging from the core on the inside, to a bead looking like it has a mouthful of deadly fangs! This fun workshop will open up new design possibilities for you that can be applied in a multitude of ways.

You will also learn how to apply bubble-free crystal encasing in the process.

Ridges!   – Intermediate - 3 to 4 Hours

This glass effect creates ridges and texture under clear encasing. This process adds texture, interest and a 3D effect to abstract beads, or for the base layer in florals.  Learn how to manipulate the glass under a clear layer of encasing.

You will also learn how to apply bubble-free crystal encasing in the process.

Trees !   – Intermediate

Create a cameo effect of a tree on a simple base bead. In this workshop you will have fun mixing glass for the trunk base, as well as a twisted cane for the leaves and then applying them.

Please note: you are required to supply your own lampwork safety glasses.

All beads created on the day will not be available until the next day, after annealing. If you cannot collect your beads, please provide an addressed bubble wrap envelope with $5 for postage so your creations can be sent to you.

Jenni StewartJenni Stewart

Hi, I’m Jenni Stewart. My love of craft began with my grandmother before I even began school. I’m currently teaching craft in Townsville and hold both teachers and state bar badges for craft in Queensland Country Womens Association. I have been teaching since 1988.

I began making cloth and clay dolls in 1996 and I’m a founding member of Tropical Topsies Cloth Dolls Club. Over the years I have made hundreds of dolls.

My passion for felting began in 2002 with my first felted doll and has grown from there. I now do many different styles of felting.

Doing craft gives me a great deal of enjoyment. But it is only a fraction of the pleasure I received from teaching craft.
