Debbie Burkett
Art has always been a part of Debbie
Burkett's life. She has worked in ceramics, stained glass,
polymer clay, fusing glass, and metalsmithing.
She has attended specialized classes from
master jewellers in order to learn the art of incorporating
diverse media into her jewellery.
She continues to challenge the conventional
boundaries of jewellery and art with her unyielding passion for
her work.
She teaches classes in electroforming and
precious metal clay at different locations and in her studio in
Prescott, Arizona.
Her work is shown in several galleries.
Metal Corrugation and Enamelling
In this
one-day hands-on class you will texture metals with small folds,
which will be modified in many ways to produce designs suitable
for the creation of jewellery. Texturing techniques of crimping
will be taught along with basic annealing.
We will also learn basic enamelling
to complete our jewellery piece.
Electroforming
Imagine the
possibilities of building layers of metal on a non-metal form
into a one of a kind jewellery piece by “growing” your own
forms. The layers of metal deposited through electroforming
results in a self-supporting structure by electrolysis. Found
objects as shells, sand dollars, glass; organics such as pods,
bugs, leaves, twigs or hand-carved wax elements can be used.
You can add electroformed elements
with fabricated and various surface treatments.
The options are endless!
The non-metal form is
coated with a metallic lacquer, which attracts metal to itself
through a chemical bath.
The process results in a
freestanding layer of metal that is an exact replica of the form
underneath. Variations in the electrical current can yield
organic crystalline growths in metal that are distorted and
gnarly.
In this class we will be electroforming
objects as listed above. The object should not be bigger than 2
inches by 2 inches.
