Josh Mazet received his BFA in Ceramics from the University of Oregon in 1999. After graduating he was invited into the Fine Arts Department as a resident artist. For three years he maintained a studio and instructed wood fired ceramics classes which included students and community members.

It was during this time Josh was introduced to lampworking boroscilicate. His work in ceramics gave him an understanding and comfort with flame, atmospheres, kilns, and the chemistry of glass. This compounded with the similarities of the medium, allowed for a smooth and rapid learning of a new medium.

PENDANT CLASS

The pendant class will focus on flame-worked pendants that feature dichroic glass. Create beautiful pendants to wear alone or as striking focal point to add to your beading projects. For beginners or students with a background working in soft glass, this is a great introduction to hard glass with one of the premiere instructors. In addition to proper dichroic application, to aid in making your pendants, Josh will cover the use of colour, colour chemistry, shop safety, set-up, prep and pattern work, design, and shaping.  All students can expect to leave class with several finished pendants

MARBLE CLASS

The marble class will be for the beginning flame workers to intermediate students interested in learning more about the process of making marbles.

The first day will begin include several demos of basic marbles.  Josh will teach you use of colour and the correct application of dichroic glass. Throughout the day there will also be an emphasis on the proper techniques in the forming and shaping of marbles.

On day two, we will take the previous days information and set our sights on creating the popular and challenging "Vortex Marble". This class will breakdown the steps of making the marble and how it contributes to the optical illusion that characterises the vortex marble. All students will leave class with a marble they have made.

LAMPWORKING VESSELS

In this class you will learn the fundamentals of working with glass/Pyrex tubing to create simple hollow forms. Josh will instruct on proper gathering and blowing techniques. Students will learn the use of hand tools, marver plates, and applying colour with rod and frits. Together we will create bowls, jars, bottles...there's no limit.

SCULPTURE CLASS

This beginning sculpture class will introduce students to the basics of lamp work sculpture. Josh will give demos on frogs, turtles and fish and will also take requests. This will give students opportunities to problem solve the challenges of making different animals. During the demonstrations josh will also cover colour use, forming and shaping, and hand tool use. Students should expect leave class with a couple of their own creations!

Josh Mazet will be running 7 classes at the festival.
