Judith Bohm-ParrClick for Judith's PortfolioJudith Bohm-Parr

Judith is a glass artist with 30 years experience who works primarily with kiln formed glass. During her long career she has investigated most areas of glass creation including fusing, slumping, casting, glass blowing, páte de verre and lampworking. After completing her BA at Canberra School of Art she spent several years developing her particular method of traditional French páte de verre before a sea change in the early 1990’s saw her establish a new studio in Cairns, Far North Queensland.

During the next 10 years Judith built the reputation of Studio 8 Glass specialising in limited edition fused and slumped glass wear reflecting the tropics, from a small business to one recognised nationally and internationally. A need to revitalise her creativity resulted in Judith embarking on further research for a Masters of Creative Arts, the focus of which was glass neck adornment.  She presently lives in the rural village of Fishery Falls, 30kms south of Cairns, where she operates her studio and glass gallery.

She has been lecturing and tutoring glass workshops throughout Australia and overseas for nearly 20 years. Her glass art is in major public and private collections including WA Art gallery, Qld Art gallery and Wagga Wagga national glass collection.

INTRODUCTION TO PÁTE DE VERRE JEWELLERY 3 Days

With a history of 3000 years, the technique of making páte de verre is as old as glass itself. Translated literally from the French, it means paste of glass. This workshop will concentrate on simple forms of páte de verre which will produce jewellery components using various sized glass frits without the use of moulds. Over 3 days you will learn how to prepare, form and fire the glass components (including páte de verre beads formed in the kiln), experiment with inclusions such as wire, gold leaf and dichroic glass. When cold the glass will be cut into shapes and using simple wire techniques create five pieces of stunning páte de verre necklaces, pendants and earrings to be taken home. There will also be a PowerPoint presentation on pate de verre.

This is an introductory class, so is suitable for beginners with no experience in glass or for those looking for new directions in their glass work. Max 8 students.

HOLLOW PÁTE DE VERRE JEWELLERY 3 Days

Come and learn how to create necklaces, pendants and earrings in páte de verre.

In this workshop you will learn how to apply the traditional method of layering glass paste thinly onto the walls of a hollow mould to form mini vessels or flower forms to be used in jewellery. Over 3 days we will investigate model and mould making techniques enabling you to individualize each piece you create. Using different grain sizes will allow us to create both opaque and translucent glass components in blended colours including kiln formed páte de verre beads and pendants. Stamens for the flowers can be made using wire, glass and the torch. Cold working techniques including grinding and drilling will prepare the separate pieces for assembly using simple wire wrapping and stringing into several stunning pieces of jewellery. There will also be a PowerPoint presentation on pate de verre.

Although this is an intermediate to advanced workshop it can still be tackled by the adventurous beginner due to smaller class size of only 8 people.

Judith Bohm-Parr will be running 2 classes at the festival.
